Good wedding vows for her don’t need grand words. They need the details only you know: the song she sings off-key while the coffee brews, the way she remembers everyone’s birthday, the night she talked you out of quitting. Those are the lines she’ll replay later.
This guide works whether you’re a groom or a bride yourself. You’ll find prompts to spark ideas, examples in different styles and a few things to leave out.
What she’ll want to hear
Think beyond “you’re beautiful” and “you’re my best friend.” Both may be true, but she’s heard them before, probably from you. Vows are a chance to say what’s harder to put into words on an ordinary day: how she has changed you, what you admire when she isn’t looking and what you’re promising to do about it.
It also helps to picture her in the moment. If she’s shy about attention, keep the praise warm but low-key. If she loves a big romantic gesture, this is the one day nobody will roll their eyes at one.
Bride vows ideas: what to write about
- The moment you knew. Not necessarily the first date, but the moment it clicked for you.
- Something she does for other people. Her kindness, loyalty or stubborn sense of fairness, shown through one real example.
- A time she held things together. A move, a hard year, a family crisis, told in a sentence or two.
- What she has taught you. Patience, how to apologize, how to cook rice properly.
- The future you can’t wait for. The garden, the trip, the kitchen table full of friends.
Wedding vows for her: examples
Each of these is built around one specific detail. Replace it with yours and the vow becomes yours too.
Romantic vows for her
I knew I was in trouble the night you made me drive back to the beach because you wanted to watch the moon come up. You were right; it was worth it. I promise to keep turning the car around for you, for the rest of our lives.
You remember everyone’s birthday, the names of everyone’s kids and exactly how I take my tea. You make people feel remembered. I promise to spend my life making you feel the same way.
I’ve loved you in that dress for about five minutes and in your old college sweatshirt for six years. I promise to love you in both, and in everything in between.
You’re the bravest person I know, and you’d argue with me about that, which proves my point. I promise to stand beside you on the brave days and to hold you on the days you don’t feel brave at all.
Short vows for her
You make everything better, including me. I promise to spend my life returning the favor.
I love who you are when you’re winning and who you are when you’re worn out. I promise to love every version of you, for good.
You laugh first and forgive fast, and I want to be more like you. I promise to keep trying, every day.
Playful vows for her
I promise to always tell you when there’s spinach in your teeth, to never comment on how many tabs you have open, and to keep competing with the dog for your attention. I know where I stand.
You have strong opinions about towel folding, sandwich cutting and how to pronounce “pecan.” I promise to respect all of them and to agree with at least two.
When we met, you beat me at trivia, then at pool, then at mini golf. I decided I’d better marry you before you beat me at anything else. I promise to keep losing gracefully, and to love you through every victory lap.
Vows to my wife, for a renewal
Ten years ago I promised to love you, and I meant it with everything I knew. I know so much more now: how you handle a hard day, how you parent our kids, how you forgive. I promise you everything I’ve learned, and everything still to come.
We got married young and grew up together, sometimes faster than we wanted. You’re still the person I’d pick out of any crowd. I promise to keep picking you.
You’ve made a home out of three apartments, one house and a lot of borrowed furniture. Home was never the address; it was you. I promise to keep making it with you, wherever we end up.
When she has children
I’m marrying you, and I’m marrying into a household with very strong opinions about movie night. I promise to learn the rules, respect the snack schedule and earn my spot on the couch.
To Noah and Lily: I promise to love your mom with everything I have, and to be someone you can count on too. You don’t have to call me anything special. Just call me when you need me.
What to leave out
- Past relationships. Even a sweet “I never felt this way before” can raise questions you don’t want at the reception.
- A paragraph about her looks. One line about how she looks is lovely. More than that, and the vows become about the dress instead of the woman in it.
- Jokes at her expense. Laugh with her, not at her. If you’re unsure a joke will land, run it past a friend who knows her well.
- Promises nobody could keep. “I’ll give you everything you’ve ever wanted” sounds big but means little. “I’ll bring you coffee every morning” is something she can actually hold you to.
Your bride isn’t waiting for perfect vows. She’s waiting to hear you, sounding like yourself, telling her what you see when you look at her. Frequently asked questions
What should I say in my vows to my wife?
If you're renewing your vows, look back before you look forward: name what the years have shown you about her, then promise something specific for the years ahead. If she's about to become your wife, start with the moment you knew.
How do I write romantic vows for her without sounding cheesy?
Swap big phrases for small, true details. "You hum when you're happy" is more romantic than any line about stars or destiny, because only you could have written it.
Should I mention how beautiful she looks?
You can, briefly, and it makes a sweet opening. Just don't let her appearance carry the vows; what she does and who she is will mean more.
How long should my vows to her be?
One to two minutes out loud works for most ceremonies. Agree on a length together so neither set of vows feels like an afterthought.
What if I'm not a writer?
You don't need to be. Answer a few honest questions on paper, pick your favorite answers and string them together; a plain sentence that's true beats a polished one that isn't.
